Up for sale, a 1967 Vox "Phantom" Mark VI Acoustic V252 in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, complete with vintage Vox case. One of the rarer and more upscale models Vox offered for a couple brief years in the mid-60s, the Mark VI Acoustic features Vox's signature teardrop body shape, gaining the "acoustic" moniker for its hollowbody construction. Loaded with the trio of original Vox single coil pickups, the Mark VI delivers cutting and clear Vox jangle with the inherent warmth and smooth character of the body design and depth. The body is just shy of 1 5/8 in depth, with a snappy yet rich acoustic tone. Weighing 6lbs 13oz, we've dialed in this Vox here to perfection at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 10-46 strings and low action and accurate intonation.
The neck has a modestly slender D profile shape with good shoulder and imperceptible taper, measuring. 840 deep at the 1st fret and tapering to.
A reliable studio and stage instrument, this Vox has received all the maintenance typically due a vintage Vox, and the ebony fretboard has been planed and refretted with vintage-spec fretwire, offering consistent action and effortless playability. The scale length measures a full 25 1/4, and the nut is a new hand-carved piece of bone. At the zero fret just forward of the nut, the neck measures 1 3/4 wide. The headstock retains the original set of Vox-embossed tuners which still turn smoothly and function well even with liberal vibrato use. All of the original electronics function as intended, with a Strat-style layout and original compliment of smooth, chrome-plated knobs.
Even the tiny trapezoidal switch tip is intact! The hardware includes the stock roller bridge, original small diameter vibrato spring, and the vibrato unit itself, with an arm that it elevated far enough off the body for broad, dramatic gestures.
The vibrato is very responsive, actuating with a light touch and jumping back to the original pitch with ease. The original mirrored pickguard tops things off, with clean Vox lettering on the guard and only minor surface pick scuffing. The guitar exhibits the heavy vertical finish checking consistent with virtually all vintage Italian-made Vox instruments, with some. Finish chipping on the back lower bout edge and minor scuffing on top, mostly in the pick path and beneath the vibrato base.
There is also light wear along the edges of the snap-on back pad. The neck profile gloss is smooth and deeply ambered, exhibiting sparingly little wear. A vintage Vox hardshell case is included, slightly oversized for this instrument, but still a handy tote with original latches and handle, and a clean gray exterior with white piping.
